Grant# SM-24-009 The Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) at the American Nurses Association (ANA) grew as a response to the lack of mental health and substance abuse nurse professionals who could provide culturally competent care to an increasingly diverse population with ever-expanding needs for mental health and substance abuse disorders services, research, advocacy, and policy development. Through the MFP, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) provides federal grants to increase the number of PhD prepared nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and marriage and family therapists from underrepresented minority groups who will: Conduct research about substance abuse and mental health disorders prevention and treatment within minority populations, across all groups and in a variety of settings. Assume leadership roles in the initiation of scientific investigations and service utilization phenomena that occur among minority populations. Expand and contribute to the evidence-based practice of substance abuse and mental health disorders prevention and treatment among minority populations throughout the lifespan. Function as leaders and members of interdisciplinary research, public health policy, and direct-service care teams with the objective of improving the overall health status of minority populations. Career Summary: The Nursing Programs/MFP/SAMHSA team is seeking a high-performing and dedicated Deputy Project Director (DPD). In this role, the DPD will partner with the Project Director and other MFP team members on strategy development to include increasing visibility and relevance within the broader nursing community. What you will do: Partner with the Project Director on all components across programming, to include developing a pathways program that provides outreach, education and raises awareness of behavioral health employment and career opportunities and training pathways for high school, community college, and vocational/technical trade school students. Contribute to the visibility of the MFP by participating in ANA leadership and other organizational meetings, bringing ideas and information back to the team to increase MFP’s effectiveness and impact. Serve as the secondary liaison to the Advisory Committee through oversight, scheduling quarterly meetings, developing agendas, and following up on action items. Share knowledge dissemination around specific psychiatric mental health and substance use nursing and emerging practice areas, including developing the alumni biographical portfolio to facilitate requests from organizations pursuing mental health and substance use subject matter experts. Identify best practices to improve internal systems with an eye toward future needs and budget realities, seeking out additional sources of funding and/or sponsorships to augment SAMHSA MFP funding. What you bring to ANA: Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) preferred but not required. Related Work Experience: 3-5 years of federal grant funding and knowledge of the grant development process. Skills and Experience: Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills; ability to translate data into clear messages for a wide range of audiences. Ability to work as part of a team, both as a leader and in a supporting capacity. Passionate about providing a long-term, innovative vision while creating pragmatic solutions to day-to-day challenges. Experience managing cross-functional teams to develop and implement systems and processes to increase effectiveness and efficiency. High degree of integrity and dependability, with strong attention to detail. Ability to manage time, deliverables, and meet deadlines.
