A law firm in Chicago, IL, seeks a highly skilled and experienced Tax Group Non-Profit Counsel. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience representing a diverse range of public charities, major colleges and universities, hospitals, healthcare organizations, and other tax-exempt entities. This role requires expertise in federal tax compliance, governance, endowment, and investment matters, with a strong focus on private foundations and charitable trusts.Duties and ResponsibilitiesRepresent and advise various public charities, major colleges and universities, hospitals, healthcare organizations, publicly supported organizations, and private foundations on federal tax matters.Provide guidance on compliance with federal tax laws applicable to charitable and tax-exempt organizations, including self-dealing, excess business holdings, and taxable expenditures.Address governance issues related to endowments, investments, and compliance with federal tax rules.Advise on the participation of tax-exempt organizations in joint ventures and the consequences of unrelated trade or business activities.Review and analyze organizational documents and practices to ensure compliance with applicable federal tax regulations.Assist with structuring and compliance of charitable and scholarship trusts.Develop and deliver training and educational materials related to tax and governance issues for non-profit organizations.Represent clients in negotiations and interactions with government agencies and other entities.RequirementsExtensive experience representing and advising public charities, private foundations, and other tax-exempt entities on federal tax and governance matters.Proven track record of handling complex issues related to endowments, investments, and compliance with federal tax laws.Strong knowledge of the federal tax rules applicable to private foundations, including self-dealing, excess business holdings, and taxable expenditure issues.Ability to address compliance and governance issues for various tax-exempt organizations.Excellent academic credentials and a demonstrated ability to provide high-quality legal advice and representation.EducationJuris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.CertificationsAdmission to the Bar in Illinois (or eligibility for admission).SkillsIn-depth understanding of federal tax laws and regulations related to charitable and tax-exempt organizations.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.Excellent verbal and written communication skills.Ability to effectively interact with clients, government agencies, and other stakeholders.Proven ability to manage multiple complex matters simultaneously.Strong organizational and time management skills.
