General Description of Position

Bard Optical is a family-owned business and a recognized leader in optometry, repeatedly ranked in the top 50 optometry practices in the nation. We have 21 offices spread throughout Central Illinois along with an optical lab in Peoria. We have an opening for a motivated and enthusiastic Director of Human Resources to oversee all facets of human resources for our 200 employees. The Director of Human Resources is responsible for ensuring compliance and implementation of the organization's policies and goals in areas including talent attraction and retention, employee benefits and government reporting. This is a key team member who will interact with all employees and levels of management as a member of the company’s senior management team. Compensation is commensurate with experience.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Annually reviews and makes recommendations to executive management for improvement of the organization's policies, procedures and practices on personnel matters.

Maintains knowledge of industry trends and employment legislation and ensures organization's compliance.

Maintains responsibility for organization compliance with federal, state and local legislation pertaining to all personnel matters.

Communicates changes in the organization's personnel policies and procedures and ensures that proper compliance is followed.

Assists executive management in the annual review, preparation and administration of the organization's wage and salary program.

Coordinates or conducts exit interviews to determine reasons behind separations.

Consults with legal counsel as appropriate, or as directed by the General Counsel, on personnel matters.

Works directly with department managers to assist them in carrying out their responsibilities on personnel matters.

Recommends, evaluates and participates in staff development for the organization.

Maintains a human resource management system that meets the organization's personnel information needs.

Supervises the staff of the Human Resource Department.

Participates on committees and special projects and seeks additional responsibilities.

Monitors activities of personnel and guides management through the company’s disciplinary procedures.

Assists in the calculation of doctor incentives.

Processes payroll.

Coordinates communications regarding the company’s 401(k).

Handles all aspects of workers’ compensation claims, including working with claims adjusters.

Handles all aspects of unemployment claims responses including attendance at telephonic administrative hearings.

Knowledge and Skills:

Requires excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills in order to work most effectively with associates, managers and doctors.

Requires strong capacity to negotiate with and influence others.

Must have outstanding communication skills and be able to interact with associates and managers of diverse backgrounds. The Director of Human Resources should be skilled in adjusting presentation and communication style as needed and serve as role models in all interactions.

Requires ability to adapt to changing circumstances while continuing to focus on the company’s goals and macro-level perspective of our business.

Must be able to discern and analyze facts and make decisions which support our business goals.

Must possess superior organizational skills, ability to meet deadlines and attention to detail.

Ability to maintain confidential information and exercise discretion.

Other Responsibilities:

Respond to questions from associates, managers, doctors and executive management.

Be proficient on Bard Optical’s human resource management software.

Required Education:

Bachelor's degree and 4 to 6 years of related experience or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

Experience with Paycor or other online HR platforms.

Master's degree.

SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) or SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) credential or a professional equivalent. Maintain certification or have the ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hire.

Experience:

Candidates with prior experience in a health care setting are preferred. Candidates with prior management experience are highly preferred. Candidates with experience in human resource management software (and Paycor specifically) highly preferred.

Working Conditions:

Office environment. However, position may require very limited travel.
