Job Summary

Job incumbent works directly with Tribes of the TCC region, tribal members, tribal staff, and other state agencies to provide and coordinate a wide range of services to assist children, parents and families who are at risk of becoming involved with the state or tribal child welfare systems. The job incumbent will assist families in participating and engaging in prevention trainings and other services to aide in keeping the family together. Job incumbent will work with the family to create a Family Prevention Plan which will include using the Strengthening Families approach.

Adhere to the TCC Ch’eghwtsen’ model of service and guiding principle which requires providing timely and effective service along with the ability to interact with others in a way that inspires trust and demonstrates respect, compassion and empathy.

Essential Functions

Representative Duties:

Identify families in need of prevention services by using screened out Protective Services Reports received from Office of Children’s Services (OCS), referrals made by the Tribe and other identified programs. Works closely with OCS staff and the Tribe to coordinate services to the family.

Use the Strengthening Families approach and/or identified curriculum while incorporating Cultural aspects to deliver quality services to include engaging parents, and communities in building five main protective factors.

Complete the Strengthening Families approach training and refreshers, and become certified in other culturally relevant parenting program curriculums.

Maintains case files, including case notes, family prevention plans, letters, and other correspondence. Assists in maintaining both electronic and manual program databases for the child protection program.

Stays current on child welfare laws and applicable policies.

Assists in classroom and teleconferencing training for TFYS, village based service providers, and other family services staff.

Hold parenting classes in person, in villages, and/or virtually to promote family preservation, healthy and safe families, and healthy relationships.

Travels to villages, periodically.

Other Responsibilities:

Perform other job related duties as required.

Perform Diligent Relative Searches as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or related field of study, OR equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Knowledge and understanding of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), the Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997 (ASFA) and the Federal BIA Social Services Regulations and how they relate to tribal protection cases.

One year of prior case management or counseling experience to include assessing services for children and families.

Must have an Alaska Driver’s License with clean driving record.

One year of experience writing professional documents such as treatment summaries or court reports.

Must pass background check pursuant to the State of Alaska background check and federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Ability to operate standard office equipment.

Strong verbal, written, interpersonal, and analytical communication skills.

Cross cultural experience working with Alaska Native families and tribes.

Strong computer skills using Microsoft Word and Excel.

Must maintain strict confidentiality.

Ability to prioritize workload and adapt to changing priorities.

Excellent problem-solving skills.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Ability to collaborate, coordinate, implement, and advocate for youth, adults, and families.

Supervision:

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Physical demands:

Job incumbent will do normal office type work with extended hours of sitting and operation of standard office and computer equipment. May deal with irate or inebriated clients. Must be able to lift and carry up to thirty pounds. Incumbent must be able to work accurately and efficiently in a busy and sometimes stressful environment.

Summation:

Job incumbent has extensive contact with the public both in person and over the phone which requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Job incumbent will be required to collect information, process information and be able to analyze the information to assist clients in an effective manner. Incumbent will be exposed to highly sensitive information and must be able to maintain strict confidentiality.
