Tribal Justice and Development Fellow
Located in Fairbanks
This position is part of the Alaska Fellows Program. All fellows live together, “in community,” in their respective host site. Each host site is unique and remarkable.
Fellows receive housing, a $1150 monthly living stipend and a $500 relocation stipend. The fellowship includes facilitated and funded opening and closing retreats.

Title:
Tribal Justice and Development Fellow
Organization Description:
Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC) was organized as Dena’ Nena’ Henash or “Our Land Speaks”; an Alaska Native non-profit corporation, charged with advancing Tribal self-determination and enhancing regional Native unity. We work toward meeting the health and social service needs of Tribal members and beneficiaries throughout our region.
Position Description:
Purpose:
To assist the Tribal Government & Client Services (TCS) Program in developing and implementing strategies, programs, and services to achieve tribal self-determination in tribal government services. This position involves working within several divisions under the TCS program (Tribal Development, Tribal Courts, Tribal Justice & Governance, Family Services). This will include support, outreach, training and technical assistance to legal advocates, Tribal Family and Youth Service Employees, Tribal Administrators, and support to TCC clients and beneficiaries.
Responsibilities include:
Assist in developing and utilizing strategies with the execution of inter-tribal courts or regional courts where multiple communities opt to have cases heard by tribal judges from outside their communities; healing to wellness courts that provide wrap around services to families that are impacted by the State of Alaska Office of Children’s Services and/or the criminal justice system; and child welfare.
Develop strategies to support family preservation and reunification within the child welfare system.
Review and expand evaluation tools to best measure the impact of the tribal court support work provided to the Tribes.
Provide administrative support to Tribal Development’s Emerging Leaders program as necessary.
Maintain and develop professional, collaborative relationships within and outside of TCS.
Assist the Legal Program staff with training and technical assistance on legal and policy issues to advocates and attorneys including assistance with in person and virtual trainings as needed.
Assist with research and casework for Tribal Government & Justice, Tribal Courts, and Tribal Development clients as necessary and appropriate.
Help with tracking and reporting identified trends, gaps, and other data pertaining to tribal justice, for grant evaluation and improvements to programs.
Skills and Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field;
Ability to establish priorities and ensure that all tasks are completed in a timely and accurate manner;
Effective communication skills with both staff and beneficiaries seeking support;
Knowledge of and/or experience working with Alaska Native cultures, languages, programs, or affairs;
