The ideal candidate will possess a broad range of technical skills and experience to provide expert-level support across various IT domains. This role is crucial in ensuring the smooth operation, maintenance, and evolution of complex IT systems within the Military Health System.
Essential Functions, Responsibilities & Duties may include, but are not limited to:
The Senior Computer Specialist will be responsible for providing high-level technical expertise and support for MHS applications and infrastructure. Key responsibilities include: Analyze, design, and implement complex IT solutions to meet the evolving needs of the Defense Health Agency. Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior team members. Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues across various IT domains. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate new technologies and improve existing systems. Develop and maintain technical documentation, including system architectures, processes, and procedures. Participate in capacity planning and performance optimization of IT systems. Assist in the evaluation and implementation of new technologies to enhance MHS capabilities. Contribute to the development of IT policies, standards, and best practices. Provide expert-level support for critical incidents and participate in on-call rotations. Ensure compliance with government regulations and security requirements in all technical solutions. Conduct technical assessments and provide recommendations for system improvements. Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends, applying relevant advancements to MHS systems. Education and Experience:
Required:
Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field with 5-7 years of experience in IT systems and infrastructure, or Master's degree in a relevant field with 3-5 years of experience in IT systems and infrastructure, or PhD in a relevant field with 0-2 years of experience in IT systems and infrastructure Required Skills and Competencies:
Extensive experience in enterprise IT systems architecture and administration Strong knowledge of networking protocols, technologies, and security principles Proficiency in multiple operating systems (e.g., Windows Server, Linux) Experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V) Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) Knowledge of database management systems and data storage solutions Understanding of IT service management principles and practices (e.g., ITIL) Experience with scripting and automation tools (e.g., PowerShell, Python, Bash) Strong problem-solving and analytical skills Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance Desired Skills and Competencies:
Experience working in government or military healthcare environments Relevant certifications (e.g., CISSP, CCNA, MCSE, AWS Certified Solutions Architect) Knowledge of healthcare IT systems and standards (e.g., HL7, DICOM) Experience with containerization and microservices architectures Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools Understanding of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies Experience with big data technologies and analytics platforms Knowledge of mobile device management and enterprise mobility solutions Familiarity with IoT technologies and their applications in healthcare Experience with identity and access management systems

This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
This position is primarily indoors, consistent with a standard office position and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. The incumbent is required to stand, walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The workload may require the incumbent to sit for extended periods of time. The incumbent must be able to read, do simple math calculations and withstand moderate amounts of stress.
The incumbent must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
