Description

The Director of Human Resources is the chief human resources officer for the College. Under the general direction of the Vice President of Finance & Administration, the Director is responsible for providing strategic leadership and direction surrounding all human resources initiatives and priorities for the College. Overall management responsibilities include recruitment, retention and employment services, benefits management and counseling, compensation, salary administration and classification, training and development, regulatory compliance and policy development, employee relations, and human resource information systems (HRIS) and records management. The Director manages a staff of four in support of approximately 600 full and part-time employees at the College’s main campus in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Responsibilities

Oversee department personnel functions; hire, train, supervise, coach and develop department employees; develop, manage and oversee department budget; monitor expenditures and funding availability; gather data and prepare reports.Oversee (and, where appropriate and necessary perform directly) the development, maintenance, implementation of employee recruitment and employee relations functions for all employees (faculty, staff and students).Analyze laws, regulations, policies and contracts pertaining to human resources; ensure the college is in compliance; advise college administration and employees; provide effective communication of human resources procedures to college staff; consult with college counsel and other human resources to remain current in issues and changes.Maintain classification and compensation plans including the origination and maintenance of job descriptions; implement appropriate salary schedules and the proper classification of new and revised positions; oversee salary placement and advancement; oversee all payroll processing for the College.Oversee administration of college benefit plans, including medical, dental, life, long term disability, and retirement systems; consult with insurers, brokers and agents as applicable; schedule benefit orientations and educational sessions; act as liaison between employees and companies to facilitate planning and problem solving.Teams with senior managers to assess organizational needs, develop improvement strategies, and design programs to implement these strategies; manages programs of professional and organizational development.Leads professional and organizational staff to design, develop, and conduct training and development programs for college staff.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in a related field plus a minimum of eight years of progressively responsible human resources experience, with at least three years of leadership and supervising experience. Experience in higher education is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of employment laws and regulations, including ADA, FMLA, FLSA, and Title IX.

Experience supervising staff.

Knowledge of HRIS systems.

Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.

Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism.

Ability to work well in a complex organization.

Broad contemporary and technical knowledge of all human resources functions and technology, including the ability to successfully develop and implement short and long-term objectives, and implement human resources programs that reflect organizational goals.

Ability to be an effective decision maker and creative problem solver.

Demonstrated leadership with strong organizational skills with the ability to balance the daily operations of a human resources office with the strategic needs of the College.
